“ Introduction to the Keyboard and Piano Class”

During my first 10 years as a church musician I played on a Steinway 6' piano. It had a very majestic sound and although not as loud as the organ held it own. I learned to use all the notes of the piano starting from the middle out. That is to say I centered myself around the note of middle "C" and played melody at top, chords to the middle and bass at the end. This is the concept we will learn in this class. I have several youtube videos that I will post here and I will comment on this concept. As a keyboard/piano church musician you have a very important part to play in music ministry. If you listen to CD's you'll here the piano/keyboard very prevalent in the beginning and ending of selections.

First, when you practice make sure that you have the keyboard elevated so that your hands are positioned over the keys. This is important in creating a proper posture. If you're not comfortable when practicing then you won't develop the touch necessary to make a keyboard sound like a real piano. Also work with a good sustain pedal.

Warm Up for acoustic or weighted keyboard

This videos shows some warmup techniques I use at the church where I minister. In the lesson course book you will find all the scales with the proper fingering. The idea is train your hands first, then your ears. As you make see my fingers do the playing and not my wrist banging on the notes. I've been playing over 38 years and I've never had pains in my fingers or wrist.
